Gift Acceptance Policy
Pius XII Memorial Library & Medical Center Library

     Individuals who wish to donate books or materials to the libraries should contact Gail M. Staines, Ph.D., Assistant Provost of University Libraries, at (314) 977-3100, or by email at gstaines@slu.edu.

     The University Libraries Gifts Committee review potential gifts for acceptance by the University Libraries (excluding the Omer Poos Library*). The Committee is responsible for facilitating professional, prompt, and well-documented responses to gift inquiries.

      The criteria for review of a gift of materials include:

  • the same general collection criteria used to select new purchases;
  • relevancy to the curriculum;
  • academic level appropriateness and quality;
  • duplication of material already in the collection;
  • physical condition of the item; and
  • freedom from restrictions that would limit the usefulness to the students and faculty of Saint Louis University.

     Before receiving gifts of books or other materials (referred to as gifts-in-kind), the University Libraries strongly encourage donors to provide a list of materials including general bibliographic information (author, title, publisher, publication dates) and the general condition of each item. Gifts accepted become the property of Saint Louis University Libraries, and, as such, the Libraries reserve the right to determine the retention, location, cataloging treatment, disposition, and other considerations related to the use, maintenance, or removal of materials.

     The Saint Louis University Libraries do not provide appraisals, tax, or legal advice. Donors should seek their own appraisal, tax, and legal advice. Donors should consider obtaining an independent appraisal of their gift and discuss the appraisal with their attorney. Upon request, the University Libraries can suggest appropriate professional appraisers. The acceptance of a gift that has been appraised by a disinterested party does not imply endorsement of the appraisal by the University Libraries.

     Donors are asked to consider contributing a minimum of $1,000 per 100 volumes donated to help expedite processing as well as defray costs of maintaining the materials given to the Libraries.
